Why Tquma?

Why the word Qum (םוּק)…? On a winter evening, in December of 2024, a group of volunteers came together to try and figure out a word that would capture the embodiment of what IBAA (International Biblical Apologetics Association) was trying to express with our support program. We wanted to find a word that would help inspire, challenge, and make people curious to explore, learn, and support our mission. As we began to brainstorm, one of our team members came up with the word Qum or םוּק in Hebrew. The first question that came to our minds was, “why the word Qum (םוּק)…?”. For you see, Qum (םוּק) in Hebrew/Aramaic is a verb that means to stand or arise (“RTL Words: QUM (םוק),” 2023). This word is not just an action but also a command. We see in scripture that there are many times that this word is being used yet there are two specific scenarios that this word have been applied. Once scenario, is in Isaiah 60:1, Isaiah (Yeshayahu) is speaking to the Kingdom of Judah and says the following words: “׃חרָז ךְילע הוהי דוֹבכוּ ךְרוֹא אב יכּ ירוֹא ימוּק” (Isaiah 60:1, n.d.) or “Arise, shine, for your light has come! The glory of Adonai has risen on you.” (Isaiah 60 (TLV), n.d.) Isaiah (Yeshayahu) was telling his people that Adonai’s glory was upon them and even though the darkness began to cover the land and other peoples, Adonia promised to “Arise” and cover them with with His glory and the nations will come to their light, (Isaiah 60 (TLV), n.d.). This is definitely imagery of the Messianic era when all will come along 1side Israel when Messiah reigns from Jerusalem. Which we believe in our mission is to stand for biblical truth and support of Hashem’s word and the Jewish people against the evils of antisemitism and of spiritual forces. Yet, there is also a stronger meaning to the word. As disciples of Yeshua HaMaschiach or (Jesus Christ) its also a word that our master used as a command to bring forth the Kingdom of Heaven. In Mark chapter 5, a synagogue leader by the name of Jairus came to him seeking his help. His daughter became ill and was near death and sought the healing of our Master. When they were on the way to Jairus’s home, news came of his daughter death. Yet, Yeshua tells the synagogue leader, “do not be afraid; only believe.” (Mark 5:36 (TLV), n.d.) When Yeshua entered the house and was standing over the young girl, He spoke with authority and said the following: “καὶ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ παιδίου λέγει αὐτῇ Ταλιθα κοῦµι· ὅ ἐστιν µεθερµηνευόµενον Τὸ κο ράσιον σοὶ λέγω ἔγειραι” (Mark 5 :: King James Version (KJV), n.d.-b) or “Then, taking hold of the child’s hand, He tells her, “Talitha kaum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you get up” (Mark 5:41 (TLV), n.d.). The young girl woke up from death and was completely healed. This word kaum in the Greek is the same word in the Hebrew/Aramaic as to “Stand or Arise”. We can see from our Master, that he commanded the little girl to “Stand or Arise” and this action was just a fore taste of the Kingdom of Heaven. As disciples of Yeshua HaMaschiach (Jesus Christ) it is our responsibility to follow in our Masters footsteps and “Arise” to the opportunity to bring forth the Kingdom just as he command the little girl to physically do. To also address the deceptions, false teachings and train believers to discern the truth from error in our age of spiritual disorientation that plague the Ecclesia. Just as Yeshua called out the people jeering at him when he informed them that the little girl was sleeping and not dead because 2the restoration of the Kingdom of Heaven was to about to happen right then and there. We too need to equip our fellow brothers and sisters in Yeshua with the same spiritual knowledge as our Master. So as we reviewed and discussed the depths of the word Qum (םוּק) this word did not just aligned to our request for people to stand with IBAA but it truly speaks to every action that we take as believers to advance the Kingdom of Heaven. For Yeshua, has called every single one of us to “Stand or Arise” and partake in the mission that the Kingdom of Heaven which is at hand. So we here at IBAA have decided to name out support program Qum (םוּק) and we ask that you please choose to “Stand” and “Arise” with us in our mission and vision to help equip the believers in Yeshua by joining our support program and volunteering your time to this cause. We thank you for taking the time to reading this article and we bless you in the name of Yeshua HaMaschiach and with the love of HaShem. From the IBAA Core Team
